Enjoy the museum from the comfort of home with this delicious Crash Course!
Gathering with friends and family to share holiday meals is a central part of the human experience. It is perhaps something we have missed most during the past year. Artists, across genres, have created visual buffets, both extravagant and modest, around the relationships with and meanings of foods. This course celebrates European visual tastes for food and feasting in late medieval through early modern art (15th through 17th centuries) in contexts both serious and silly. Explore the many roles played by food and drink from representations of the Last Supper in devotional art to the raucous, drunken parties in genre paintings by Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and Jacob Jordaens. Discover the deeply symbolic still life arrangements of food commenting on virtue to those that elevate the global trade in luxury snacks. No matter your palate, there is a little taste of something for everyone!
About Saskia Beranek
Dr. Saskia Beranek specializes in the art of the Dutch Republic during the 17th century with an emphasis on the role of women as patrons and artists. She received her MA in Art History from Duke University and her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. She is Assistant Professor of art history at the Wonsook Kim School of Art at Illinois State University.

This year, visitors are invited to celebrate together this season at Carnegie Museum of Art! Make the museum your backdrop with Friends and Family Photoshoot, create a handmade gift inspired by art and enjoy holiday treats during Gift-Making Workshops, celebrate the end of the year with your team during one of our Out of Office Parties, and delight in live musical performances every Saturday from November 27 through December 18 during Sounds for the Season.
