Learn this bold relief printmaking method embraced by the German Expressionists in the early 20th century, Picasso and Matisse at mid-century, and contemporary artists working today. Carve both traditional linoleum blocks and newer alternatives to achieve a variety of effects.

Strengthen your observational skills and learn techniques that will help you better understand figural proportions. Experiment with line, gesture, value, and shading to add more accuracy to the drawings. First draw from the plaster figures in the Hall of Sculpture, then from a draped model in the last two class sessions.

Join Carnegie Museum of Art curators for a four-part series that explores the ideas, questions, and artworks shaping the future of the field. Through close looking and conversation, each session offers a window into the work of contemporary curators—what excites them, what challenges them, and how they are thinking about the museum’s collection in new ways.
Focusing on four areas of Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection, each curator will share key works, emerging perspectives, and the questions that are guiding their research and practice. Whether you are new to art history or a lifelong learner, this series invites you to explore art not as a fixed story, but as an evolving conversation.
Each session includes a 50-minute presentation followed by 25 minutes for questions and discussion.
