Visit the museum with your young children to explore imaginary play, art-making, art viewing, and movement activities. We’ll keep your little artist engaged by moving between stations that will invite each child and guardian to create in a way that is interesting and developmentally appropriate. A caregiver is required to attend with the child or children they register.

Museum Makers is a weekly studio-based program that provides art-making, discussion, and sensory experiences for young and school-aged children. Artists will have exposure to a wide variety of art-making tools and materials, but will also practice problem solving and integrate learning from other areas of education such as math and reading.

Term 1: September 18–October 9
Ages 6–7
Drawing
Artists will merge traditional and experimental methods by exploring mark-making with unexpected drawing tools and learning traditional concepts in portraiture and landscape.
Ages 8–10
Painting
Artists will go BIG in this introduction to mural painting and collaboration, looking to Carnegie Museum of Art’s staircase mural The Crowning of Labor and Keith Haring’s large painted artwork Untitled, for inspiration on style, subject, and technique.

Term 2: October 30–November 20
Ages 6–7
Painting
Artists will be introduced to diverse painting mediums, tools, and techniques and begin their journey in color mixing in relaxed play centers.
Ages 8–10
Photography
Inspired by works in the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archives, students will explore composition, lighting, digital and instant photography, and image-making processes.

Term 3: January 8–29
Ages 6–7
Sculpture
Inspired by artist Charles Harlan’s work in the Forum Gallery, artists will travel between exploration centers that center on combining forms, using found materials, and altering objects.
Ages 8–10
Ceramics: Hand Building
Artists will create tiles, bowls, and sculptures with clay using hand-building techniques like slap and coil.

Term 4: February 19–March 12
Ages 6–7
Ceramics
Artists will build, squish, and roll their way to enduring ceramic artwork in this introduction to hand building, glazing, and surface design.
Ages 8–10
Ceramics: Wheel Throwing
In this introduction to the wheel, artists will construct vessels, combine forms, and experiment with surface design and glazes.

Term 5: April 2–23
Ages 6–7
Photography
In addition to producing images with digital and instant cameras, artists will alter photographs through collage, screen printing, and image transfers.
Ages 8–10
Drawing
Artists will explore subtractive drawing techniques in the realm of printmaking by concentrating on quality of line, texture, and the shape of their drawn objects.
