About the Artists
Sweet Abyss is an event to center people that run afoul of societal expectations and playsa wide variety of fun, strange, rhythmic sounds to dance or move their minds to. Dance to all kinds of synth-wave, trip hop, dub, disco, and electronic explorations. Sweet Abyss is hosted by its residents, Kiernan Laveaux, Malzof, Davis Galvin, and Carrie Sours.
MIRA MIRAāA prolific artist and DJ based in NYC, she is a member of trans-centered Salsa band Las Mariquitas, the DJ/live hybrid super group Spiral Generator, and the Bomba band Recao RulĆ©! She spent many years in Pittsburgh uplifting the local community, centering Black and Brown queer and trans folks through her work with Dyspheric and The Uhaul Disco. This is just the icing on the cake of the deep well of her repertoire and impact.
KinsellandāAlso known as Ā Kinselland Radio, Kinselland is a collaborative creative project and vinyl-driven sonic experience run by the husband-and-wife artist duo Anqwenique Kinsel, vocalist and educator, and DS Kinsel, visual artist and cultural worker. Their live, vinyl-based DJ and sonic journey blends deep cuts of classical, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, rock, and retro pop. Their selections often draw from a family archive of inherited records alongside personal crate-digging discoveries rooted in 20th-century African American art.
Carrie SoursāA resident of Sweet Abyss, she began her record collection at age 4 and came of age in smoke-filled music shops; throughout the 2010s she became involved in Clevelandās underground hip-hop and electronic music scenes. With a voracious and irreverent approach to genre, she describes her sound as āmoody and funky,ā fusing emotional and psychedelic dance music with sensual grooves, post-punk, and private press records with an approach born of the DIY, glamour-free creative environment of the Midwest. An excellent emcee as well as fantastic DJ, she espouses silliness as a sanity play.
Davis GalvināKnown worldwide for their ambient, exploratory, electronic, downtempo and off-kilter club tracks, this Pittsburgh-based field recordist, sonic researcher, and producer is soundtracking balms to soothe the dissonance of our times. Also a resident of Sweet Abyss, Galvin has released dozens of EPs and albums and has DJed dance floors and third spaces across the country and beyond.
Jules āMalzofā MaliceāMultimedia artist, community leader, and DJ, Malzofcultivates a more-than 15-year-long creative practice in video production, live visuals, painting, and installation art. Their visual practice expanded to DJing and audio production to create audiovisual experiences and share sounds that match their visual ideas. They ultimately formed the Malzof project as a way to reclaim their family history and name against US-based cultural hegemony and idealism. Malzof is a co-founder and resident of Sweet Abyss.
