“… one of the reasons to have a studio in the first place is that you can keep the world out and control your thoughts.” —Rachel Harrison

  1. Find a comfortable position and take a moment to center yourself.
  2. Gently gaze at the artwork before you. Begin to scan the sculpture from bottom to top. What emotions arise as you observe its shape and color? What do these elements communicate to you?
  3. Reflect on the title: Utopia. How might this piece symbolize a utopia for the artist? What aspects of the artwork evoke feelings of idealism, peace, or harmony?
  4. Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your breath. Take a deep, calming inhale and exhale.
  5. Begin to envision your own personal utopia. Picture it in as much detail as possible: the colors, the textures, the shapes, the smells.
  6. This vision may take the form of a specific place, or it might appear as a symbol or image, like a sculpture, within your mind’s eye.
  7. Pay attention to the feelings that arise as you immerse yourself in this utopia. How does it make you feel—calm, energized, inspired?
  8. Remember that you can return to this visualization whenever you need to reconnect with your ideal world. Take a few more deep breaths, savoring this peaceful image, before gently bringing your awareness back to the present moment.
