Reflection Meditation

Audio Feb. 4, 2021
ā€œSculpture is a parable in three dimensions, a symbol of a spiritual experience, and a means of conveying truth by concentrating its essence into visible form.... It must be the reflection of the artist who creates it and of the era in which he lives, not an echo or a memory of other days and other ways.ā€

Step-by-Step Meditation

  1. Relax in a still position and look at the sculpture.
  2. Contemplate the expression on the figureā€™s face. What truth might the artist be conveying through this visible form?
  3. Now, reflect inwardly. What emotion does the expression represent to you?
  4. Close your eyes and focus on this emotion. You might label it with a color, a word, or simply be with it, experiencing it without a label.
  5. As a new thought enters the mind, reflect on the emotion that is associated with it. Use the emotion as your focus point, meditating upon it, until a new one arises.
  6. Notice each emotion without judgement, without trying to push away or cling to any one emotion. Be truthful with yourself, accepting the emotions you feel from moment to moment.
  7. Continue like this, reflecting on your own emotions to build awareness in your mind.
