“Nothing that surrounds us is object, all is subject.”
André Breton

Focus on and contemplate the subjectivity of your mind with this guided meditation on thoughts to Rokni Haerizadeh’s Reign of Winter.

Step-by-Step Meditation

  1. Take some time to look at this image from a work of video art.
  2. What associations come to your mind as you look at the objects in this work? How might your personal experiences impact your reaction to the images you see?
  3. Close your eyes and focus on your breath.
  4. Notice any thoughts that start to enter your mind. As a thought arises, bring your awareness to any feelings or associations that accompany it.
  5. You might notice that you classify your thoughts with words like good, bad, pleasant, or painful based off your past conditioning. Your individual experience creates different associations and narratives that are completely different than that of any other person.
  6. Focus on and contemplate the subjectivity of your mind as you follow your thoughts from one to another.
  7. Stay with your thoughts in this way for as you long as you like, to build insight into your thought patterns and reactions.
