Meditation on Thoughts

“We stand for a use of color free from the imitation of things as colored objects. We stand for an aerial vision in which the material of color is expressed in all of the manifold possibilities our subjectivity can create.”
Carlo Carrà

Bring your awareness to the different colors in this painting, close your eyes, and imagine your breath as a stream of water during this guided meditation inspired by Carlo Carrà’s painting The Swimmers.

Step-by-Step Meditation

  1. Take some time to look at this work.
  2. Bring your awareness to the different colors in this painting. Try to separate the colors from the objects you see, and notice them as color alone.
  3. Bring your attention to the different colors in the water. Notice how the different shades of blue, green, and purple create the illusion of movement.
  4. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Imagine your breath moving in and out of your body just as a stream of water.
  5. Now, imagine your consciousness as the water. As thoughts enter the mind, visualize them drifting by in the water of your consciousness just as the swimmers in the painting move through the water.
  6. Try to let go of any associations that might arise with your thoughts. Notice them as they are in the moment, without any judgment, similarly to how you focused on the colors in the painting. Focus your attention on each thought as it drifts by.
  7. Continue following your thoughts as they float by from moment to moment to build mindfulness and insight into your thought patterns.
