Meditation on Lines

“I think my best skill as an architect is the achievement of hand-to-eye coordination. I am able to transfer a sketch into a model into the building.”
Frank Gehry

Bring your awareness to the edges of Frank Gehry’s Easy Edges Rocker and begin to transfer the movement of the lines into your body.

Step-by-Step Meditation

  1. Take some time to look at this cardboard rocker.
  2. Bring your awareness to the edges. Slowly trace the outline of the object with your eyes.
  3. Imagine the rocking motion this rocker would make if you were to move its bottom edge from side to side.
  4. Begin to transfer the movement of the lines into your body. Bring any organic movement into your body as you gently rock side to side. You might start by moving your head from side to side and eventually find a larger movement as you sway your entire torso from side to side. Connect with your body-to-eye coordination.
  5. Now, pause back at center and close your eyes. Imagine your own rocker in your mind’s eye. What lines do you see?
  6. Bring back that gentle rocking movement and imagine you are tracing the lines with your body once again. This time, rock side to side and then forward and backward, until you find a place of equilibrium in your body.
  7. Pause there for a few deep breaths, enjoying the stillness and balance of your body.
