“I don’t want to get too literal about things. I want the viewer to be able to do the work, too.” —Susan Rothenberg
- Find a comfortable position to view this painting. Settle into the space and notice how the black-and-white composition invites your attention.
- While the title suggests the presence of ten figures, notice that there are only three immediately visible. Take a moment to let go of the need to find all ten.
- Gently shift your focus to the spaces between the figures. Can you detect subtle shadows or hidden shapes that might suggest the presence of others? Allow your gaze to soften and explore areas where figures might be hidden, not fully revealed.
- When you’re ready, close your eyes and take a deep, calming breath. Let your awareness settle into your body.
- Begin counting from 1 to 10, connecting each number with your breath. Inhale as you think 1, exhale. Inhale 2, exhale, and continue this pattern until you reach 10.
- As you focus on each breath and each number, notice if any figures or shapes emerge in your mind’s eye. Do these shapes feel distinct, or do they seem to blend together? Let whatever arises come without judgment.
- Once you reach 10, pause. You can either release the counting or repeat the practice, letting your awareness expand with each breath and each number.
