“Because I have an active and obsessive eye‚ I’m interested in finding as much contentment as I possibly can. In my work I create problems and then solve them in order to feel peace.” —Mark Grotjahn
- Find a comfortable position and relax as you settle into your body.
- Gently gaze at the artwork, Untitled (Red Butterfly Over Green). Notice the shades of red, ranging from deep, rich tones to lighter hues. Pay attention to the lines that beam out from the center—how do they draw your eye, and what kind of energy do they convey to you?
- As you observe the piece, allow yourself to breathe deeply. Inhale slowly and exhale gently, allowing your breath to flow in rhythm with the lines that radiate outward from the center of the painting.
- Reflect on the sense of movement created by the beams. Imagine that the lines are like rays of energy, extending into the space around you. How do they make you feel? Are they calming, energizing, or something else?
- Now, close your eyes and begin to visualize the vibrant red hues. Picture these colors in your mind’s eye. Imagine them expanding within you, filling you up with warmth and energy.
- Visualize the lines that beam outward from the center of the painting, and imagine they are extending beyond the canvas. Now imagine the same beams of energy flowing from your body, out into the world around you.
- Take a few more deep, slow breaths, savoring the feeling of the red rays of energy. Know that you can return to this visualization whenever you need to find calm or renewal.
- When you’re ready, gently bring your awareness back to the present moment, carrying the sense of peace you’ve cultivated with you as you move throughout your day.
