Firman Ichsan (born 1953, Jakarta, Indonesia; lives in Jakarta, Indonesia) is a photographer, curator, and educator whose artistic practice spans fashion, image politics, and cultural pedagogy. In the late 1970s, he became a leading figure in fashion and lifestyle photography through his work for prominent women’s lifestyle magazines in Indonesia. Since 1993, he has taught at the Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ), where he helped establish Indonesia’s first formal academic photography program. Ichsan cofounded the Oktagon Visual Education & Culture Development Foundation (2001–2005), a key platform for photography education, exhibitions, and critical discourse. As a member of the Jakarta Arts Council, he played a key role in the 2009 Jakarta Biennale’s transformation into an international platform—held for the first time across multiple public spaces, beyond the conventional art center. He served as head curator of the inaugural Jakarta International Photo Festival in 2019.
