Co-Artistic Directors of MICHIYAYA, Anya and Mitsuko Clarke-Verdery are reimagining Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (1913) through a de-gendered and anomalous lens. Drawing on the work’s legacy of ritual and sacrifice, MICHIYAYA excavates the score’s narrative to ask new questions about the themes and controversy that ensued from the provocative premiere. MICHIYAYA’s creative time finds a resonant home in the 59th Carnegie International, If the word we.
MICHIYAYA will be in response to the works of the International, situating the concepts of ritual and the sacrificial body within a larger inquiry into collective life: who comprises the “we” that demands a sacrifice, and who is excluded from it? By expanding the narratives of The Rite of Spring, Anya an Mitsuko reach toward a “we” that holds contradiction, refuses fixed identity, and remains open to change—a world in transition.
MICHIYAYA will conduct both private creative residency time and a public work-in-progress showing during the exhibition
