Among the many stories of the Carnegie International, the museumās signature exhibition series, the one you find in this gallery is a tale of objects that traveled from near and far and ended up in Carnegie Museum of Artās collection.
Since its inaugural edition in 1896, the International has showcased works by nearly 5,000 artists from approximately 60 countries. Although the frequency, format, and focus have changed over time, the series continues to reach across geographies to bring together art, people, and ideas.
Most of the contributions get returned to their creators, but the museum has consistently looked to the International as an opportunity to build its collection. 520 artworks and counting acquired from past Internationals have helped shape the identity of the museum as a constantly evolving institution. Presented here is a small selection of those works that narrate different chapters of the exhibition series. You will encounter more art that once debuted as part of the International throughout the galleries and on the museum grounds.
