When the Heinz Architectural Center opened in 1993, our mission was to help people understand and appreciate architecture, investigating the history of architectural expression as well as current issues in the field. Twenty years later, our mission stands firm, but the world around us has shifted. Today, many more organizations and institutions offer programs promoting architecture and design, and the public is increasingly aware of the role architecture plays in their daily lives. People donât just want to learn about architectureâthey want to be a part of the conversation.
The Heinz Architectural Centerâs 20th anniversary is the perfect time to consider our role in this changing environment. In 20/20: Celebrating Two Decades of the Heinz Architectural Center, weâre reflecting on our past and looking ahead to a future of open dialogue. You can follow a timeline that highlights our important exhibitions, events, and acquisitions; explore 20 objects from our collection selected by current or past curatorial staff because of their personal resonance; and watch and listen as people from outside the museum reflect on experiences in their own lives that were profoundly affected by architecture.
