Join the Advocates for African American Students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Equity Advisory Panel for a community gathering that centers art and the power of generations of collective struggle for educational racial equity.

This event honors more than 30 years of education justice and advocacy in Pittsburgh. It will include special acknowledgments of contributors to the movement, a community and panel discussion, and a call to action.

Time will be devoted to fellowship, remembrance, and viewing the after school, Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive, and Black Photojournalism exhibitions.

Art-making activities will be available for children of all ages. Parking will be provided for all attendees.

About the Equity Advisory Panel

The Advocates for African American Students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools is a grassroots community group organized in the mid-1980’s by the late Dr. Barbara Sizemore in response to the failure of Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide a quality education for African American Students. The Equity Advisory Panel (EAP), is a voluntary group created as part of the 2006 Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission Conciliation Agreement between the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education and the Advocates for African-American Students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools to monitor the district’s progress in addressing the horrific racial disparities.

The struggle for a quality education for African American Students continues, led by advocates and educators, EAP analyzes PPS data, monitors accountability to racial equity agreements and recommends strategies, methods, and programs to Pittsburgh Public Schools centering the education of African American children.

after school begins with the first bell. It brings together architects, artists, and educators to study the state and stakes of public education. Through spatial propositions, installations, alternative playgrounds, and curricular proposals, the participants consider architectural, pedagogical, and representational structures that shape how knowledge is created, shared, taught, or withheld.
