Through Our Lens, Inspired by Charles “Teenie” Harris

Meet and work with artists Njaimeh Njie and Dominick McDuffie as they guide you through their process of photographing everyday surroundings. Njaimeh and Dominick will each lead workshops in three locations: 38a Gallery in East Liberty, beSOCIAL Community Center in Mon-View in West Mifflin, and Carnegie Museum of Art. The workshops are developed in response to the work of Charles “Teenie” Harris and will encourage attendees to consider their environment as they document people and places in their lives.

The workshops are nonsequential; attending more than one is not required. Admission is pay what you wish. Open to all ages, and all abilities. All children under 13 must be accompanied and supported by an adult.

Participants should bring their own device to take pictures (cell phone, iPad, or any kind of camera). All other supplies will be provided by the museum.

* Museum admission is included with workshops that take place at the museum. Registrants should check-in at the admissions desk on the day of the workshop.

About the Artists:

Njaimeh Njie is a photographer, filmmaker, and multimedia producer. In her practice, Njie uses the built environment as means of exploring how the past has shaped contemporary life. Her work has been exhibited at spaces including the Carnegie Museum of Art and Pittsburgh International Airport, and she has presented at venues including TEDxPittsburghWomen, and Harvard University.

Njie was named the 2019 Visual Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh City Paper, and the 2018 Emerging Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. She earned her B.A. in Film and Media Studies in 2010 from Washington University in St. Louis.

Dominick McDuffie is a Pittsburgh-based artist working primarily in film photography. A self-taught artist, his process is rooted in community, cultural preservation, and authentically documenting Black spaces, as well as the people in and around them. He photographs subjects in a way that is often candid and unstaged, with a goal to evoke feeling, understanding, and beauty within the ordinary.
