Join esteemed Sogetsu ikebana teachers Ken Katayama Sensei and Koso Katayama Sensei for the workshop “Technique—In a Suiban without Kenzan” (Sogetsu Textbook #5–8).
The workshop is limited to 20 people and is open to existing Sogetsu students with at least one certificate.
The program brings to life the Carnegie Prize–winning presentation of work by Sofu Teshigahara (1900–1979), artist and founder of the Sogetsu ikebana (est. 1927), featured in If the word we: 59th Carnegie International (now through January 3, 2027).
This event is organized in collaboration with Sogetsu Pittsburgh.
About the Artists
Ken Katayama’s lifetime journey with Sogetsu ikebana began over 60 years ago in 1962 when he first joined the Sogetsu school and the Sogetsu Atelier staff. He accompanied Sogetsu founder and first Iemoto Sofu Teshigahara and subsequently second Iemoto Kasumi Teshigahara and third Iemoto Hiroshi Teshigahara on trips to support their global ikebana activities. In 1971, Katayama-sensei founded his Fukuoka-based school of Sogetsu ikebana in the Kyushu region of Japan, where he continues to offer instruction as well as develop installations for public spaces around the world. His robust demonstration and exhibition history includes a project at The Andy Warhol Museum in 1997, presenting at the Hong Kong Flower Show in 2014, and a solo exhibition at the Kego Shrine in Fukuoka in 2023. He served as the World Convention Chairperson for the Ikebana International 11th World Convention in 2017 and received a Fukuoka City Cultural Award in 2021. Ken Katayama is a master instructor of the Sogetsu headquarters, a special advisor of the Japan Ikebana Art Association, Director of the general incorporated foundation “Sogetsu-kai,” and Director of the Sogetsu School Teacher’s Association.
Koso Katayama began her Sogetsu ikebana practice in 1978, going on to teach, lecture, and contribute her ikebana work to publications. Her practice has received accolades, including the Akane Teshigahara Award in 2017. Koso Katayama has been Director of the Sogetsu School Fukuoka Chapter since 2021 and continues to produce installation works and demonstrations across Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. She is a master instructor of the Sogetsu headquarters and lead artist of Hana Art Katayama, a Sogetsu artist collective including Ken Katayama and Hana Katayama. Her artistry also incorporates her calligraphy practice under the pseudonym Shoen Yamaguchi.
