2–3 p.m.: Tam O’Shanter Drawing Session: Standing & Book Signing
Open to the public.
Maira Kalman will conduct two drawing sessions at Carnegie Museum of Art. An illuminator of the everyday, Kalman is a prolific artist, illustrator, regular contributor to The New Yorker, and a Travelogue writer for the Carnegie Int’l, 57th ed., 2018.
The first session, Walking & Looking & Not Thinking, will be intimate. With a journal in hand, participants will make plein-air drawings of their outdoor encounters, including dogs and birds, trees and promenaders. In case of spring showers, come bearing an umbrella. First come, first serve: register online.
The second session, Standing & Book Signing, will take place at the Carnegie Museum of Art Design Store. Bring your own favorite Kalman book (or purchase select titles from the store) and plan to draw while standing in line for your turn.
Tam O’Shanter Drawing Sessions
These creative sessions are for those who draw and for those who don’t. Explore contemporary art through improvised forms of drawing with artists and organizers of the 2018 Carnegie International. Sketching, doodling, cartooning, mapping, writing, and marking are among the many modes that will bring us together.
Named after the original art classes for young people that Carnegie Museum of Art has been holding since 1929; the tam o’shanter, or tam, is a Scottish beret—oft adorned by a pompom.
