Come together to celebrate and engage with the summer season of art exhibitions and all of the people who made it happen!
Artists featured throughout the museum transform materials such as plastic, metals, electronics, and fabric into artworks. To celebrate the infinite wonder of contending with the trash made in our material world and re-imagining possibilities of re-use, Squonk will lead us in transforming these same materials into musical instruments that we wear! We’ll make jingling, honking costumes collaboratively, right on-site. We will choreograph these musical parade backpacks for everyone, with a full rhythm section backing and drum major leading. We’ll have handheld instruments for accessible participation, lively art pieces and parade elements to support these joyous pageants. Let’s turn waste into wonder, and junk into joy—together!
Schedule
- 11 a.m.–4 p.m: Squonk’s Parade of Recycled Wonders
- 1 p.m.: Toast and parade celebrating the season of the artwork on view in the museum

About Squonk
Squonk creates boisterous outdoor spectacles by fusing fantastical visual design, playful staging, and high-energy original music. Witty and whimsical, Squonk’s free performances bring audiences together to celebrate humankind and our often peculiar world. Since their first big show in a Pittsburgh junkyard, Squonk Co-Artistic Directors Jackie Dempsey and Steve O’Hearn have led a group of musicians, artists, designers and other creatives producing site-specific shows with big visual and musical impact. Squonk’s productions have taken the group to Off-Broadway, Broadway, America’s Got Talent, Europe, Asia and all over the United States. The group has released 10 albums of its progressive rock music, a blend of styles featuring driving rhythms and hypnotic riffs.
