Edith Abeyta’s Nasothek: pick it, paint it, put it on
For Summer Break, artist Edith Abeyta presents a new collaborative artwork. Participate all day!
What do our body parts reveal about our identity? Back in time, anthropologists colonized the body with measurements, photographs, drawings, and speculations. In the 21st century, bodily identification enmeshes with technology to categorize, record, accuse and protect our persons. Scans of our irises keep us safe. Facial recognition software verifies who we are. Fingerprints divulge our criminality. DNA can tell our ancestral story.
Today in Pittsburgh, the Gateway to the Westâs ânebbyâ capital, Abeyta asks you to share your nose not only with her but with others. To acknowledge it as a complex site of comedy and tragedy. To let others adorn themselves with you and experience a temporary body modification with multi-tiered meanings. To release a unique part of yourself so that others can recognize a unique part of themselves. To engage in a performative exchange of appearance, identity, and perspective.
