Come into the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Galleries for story time with curatorial assistant Alyssa Velazquez reading Flipflopi: How a Boat Made from Flip-Flops Is Helping to Save the Ocean by Linda Ravin Lodding and Dipesh Pabari and illustrated by Michael Machira Mwangi, followed by a making activity for children 12 and under.
About the Book
Juma wants to go fishing with Babu Ali. But when they get to the beach, it’s full of plastic waste and flip-flops washed up from the ocean. Juma thinks the flip-flop floating in the water looks like a boat, and that gives Babu Ali an idea. Based on the true story of the Kenyan dhow boat Flipflopi, this inspirational tale demonstrates how innovation, art, and determination can transform plastic pollution into something useful.
