How is a school remembered or imagined through a movie camera? Artist and filmmaker Chantal Feitosa-Desouza curates a selection of shorts where filmmaking becomes a mirror for learners to self-define their relationships to education and power.
Screening to feature:
- Mangrove School by Filipa César & Sónia Vaz Borges (2022)
- Christmas at Moose Factory by Alanis Obomsawin (1971)
- Olho da Rua (Out Loud) by Jonathas de Andrade (2022)
- Teaching America by Anurima Bhargava (2025)
- Lightning in a Bottle by Chantal Feitosa-Desouza (2025)
The outside world becomes the classroom in this series of international films, ranging from the Americas to West Africa. The student becomes the leading actor, and the director imparts knowledge often overlooked or suppressed by colonial power structures. Through these genre-blending stories, the learner’s perspective guides what we see and experience. Rooted within the present context of Pittsburgh’s public education landscape, this program will offer audience members insights into how the challenge of creating liberatory spaces of education and community is a global and timeless endeavor.
