A film by Rubaiyat Hossain
Made in Bangladesh (Bangladesh) follows Shimu, a young garment factory worker in Dhaka struggling with long hours, low wages, and unsafe conditions. After a deadly fire exposes how vulnerable workers are, Shimu meets a local labour activist who urges her to form a union. Despite intimidation from management, harassment from male coworkers, and pressure from her conservative husband, Shimu slowly gathers support from other women in the factory. The group faces bureaucratic barriers, threats, and violent retaliation as they fight for recognition. Their journey reveals the global garment industryâs exploitationâBangladeshâs workers producing for Western brands while living in poverty. As Shimu gains confidence, she confronts both state power and patriarchal norms at home. The film ends with the women filing their union registration, uncertain of the outcome but emboldened by solidarity, showing how collective organising offers dignity and a pathway to change even within oppressive economic systems.
