Please join us for a celebration and first look at James “Yaya” Hough’s community mural, commissioned as part of Is it morning for you yet?, the 58th Carnegie International.
For the 58th Carnegie International, James “Yaya” Hough has created a community-informed mural in the Hill District of Pittsburgh where he grew up. In preparation for the project, Hough held community workshops and paint days in collaboration with arts organizations Nafasi and BOOM Concepts. In addition to the mural, a selection of Hough’s drawings will be presented at Carnegie Museum of Art throughout the duration of Is it morning for you yet?.
During the celebration, enjoy DJ sets by DJ Shade Cobain and complimentary food from Caribbean Vybz food truck. At 6:30 p.m., join us for remarks by Sohrab Mohebbi, Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator 58th Carnegie International, DS Kinsel, Artist, Curator and Co-Founder of BOOM Concepts, and the artist, James “Yaya” Hough.
The mural is located at 2317 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This opening celebration is free and open to the public, and no advance registration is required. About the Artist
James “Yaya” Hough has been heavily involved for more than a decade with Mural Arts Philadelphia, creating more than 50 works that have been installed at the State Correctional Institution–Graterford and the State Correctional Institution–Phoenix. His work was included in Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, which opened at MoMA PS1, New York, and traveled to the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, Birmingham, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati. His most recent solo exhibition Invisible Life opened at JTT gallery in New York in May 2021.
