Liner Notes with Lauren Goshinski
Lauren Goshinski: Hi Title Town! What a year it has been, but I am happy to see us back at Carnegie Museum of Art for another summer session. You are all such deep diggers, what music and time periods do you keep in your records crates and how do they influence you as DJs?
Forrest Getemgump: The records sitting in my crates ranges from soul, funk, disco, breaks disco, and hip-hop. I’m influenced by other good DJs as well as crowds that appreciate good music and love to dance.
Lauren Goshinski: What has 2022 been like for your projects, and where can we find you the rest of the year?
J. Malls: Now that things have opened back up, they are great! We’re at Spirit in Lawrenceville on the first Saturday of each month.
Forrest Getemgump: 2022 has been great for re-evaluating and exploring different directions with my music. I’ve had time to sit down and learn my drum machine. Early this summer, you can find me DJing outdoor rollerskating events in Downtown Akron and I’ll be in New York later on. Check for me on Spotify, Soundcloud, Beatport, and Traxsource.
Lauren Goshinski: This year’s Inside Out Series is centered around the concept of “+1.” Each crew has been invited to add a special guest artist to help expand the music and connections for artists and audiences alike.
Tell us about your “+1” guest!
J. Malls: I met Forrest approximately 20 years ago while working at Jerry’s Records in Squirrel Hill. He stopped into the shop while traveling back and forth between Ohio and NYC. He’s a great DJ with a vast knowledge base. The last time we spun together was at The Big Throw Back in December 2007.
Lauren Goshinski: What can people expect to hear on your night at Inside Out?
J. Malls: People can always expect to hear the unexpected from Title Town.
Forrest Getemgump: Same answer as J. Malls: rare unexpected danceable treats!
Lauren Goshinski: Any shoutouts you’d like to make?
J. Malls: Shout out to Willie Weber over at the Vinyl-Man Warehouse.
Forrest Getemgump: Shout to all the music lovers and Title Town for having me in Pittsburgh again!
About the Artists
Title Town Pittsburgh’s J.Malls and Gordy G. are the creators and resident DJs at TITLE TOWN, the high-octane, all-vinyl soul and funk dance party making bodies move since 2009. Inspired by legendary Pittsburgh DJs like Porky Chedwick and Mad Mike, TITLE TOWN upholds their legacy by blending an appreciation of the classic and forgotten sounds of decades past – namely Northern soul, funk, disco, and vintage rhythm and blues – with a contemporary edge, turned all the way up. The duo navigates genres and eras, blending the best of Motown, Stax, and Chess with hand-picked 45rpm rarities from regional soul scenes around the country – turning dedicated crowds into feel-good dance floor frenzies.
Forrest Getemgump is a DJ of the true-school variety. His knowledge of breakbeats is exhaustive, and his ability to play a single genre or flit between soul, funk, disco, classic hip-hop, house and rare breaks within a single set exhibits both the depth of his crates and his ability to connect seemingly disparate styles.
