Liner Notes with Lauren Goshinski
Lauren Goshinksi: Hi Cold Cuts – for this edition of inside out you are breaking from your regularly scheduled disco program for something a little different. Can you tell us more about this and why you’re exploring new directions for Inside Out?
Jarrett Tebbets: I’ve been fortunate to have the chance to curate and play Inside Out and the Third Thursday series in the past with Carnegie Museum of Art, and during those times, my main focus was dance and disco. I was thinking, “Let’s turn the museum out!” The last go around had me thinking if I had the chance to do it again, I want to switch it up and do something different, and here we are.
Playing at the museum can sometimes feel more like a performance or a journey and less like a DJ dance set, so I wanted to take a similar line to that thinking. A 5–9 p.m. set time felt like the perfect time to make the courtyard into a chill-out rave room instead of a full-blown disco. I’m excited to switch it up and see where it goes.
Lauren Goshinksi: Please tell us more about your +1 guest!
Jarrett Tebbets: Private Sea are Ryan M Todd and Alex Tebbs Mitchell, a musical project built for an auditory exploration of the wild blue yonder. Private Sea, an electronic music duo based in Philadelphia, PA, composes and performs ambient, new age, and space music. Ryan and Alex produce in the studio and conduct an ensemble of live electronic and organic instruments in immersive and intimate environments.
Lauren Goshinksi: You have been a longtime DJ and party promoter around Pittsburgh and know the landscape well. In your opinion why is a free all-ages space like Carnegie Museum of Art good for electronic and experimental music?
Jarrett Tebbets: It’s incredibly important to have these types of events and spaces as they’re few and far between. Your options are limited as a teen when it comes to electronic/dance music, and to have something like this available would’ve blown 16-year-old Jarrett’s mind. The lineup and curation of this year’s Inside Out is absolutely bonkers, and thinking that if there’s just one teen that walks away with a new appreciation for a genre they never heard before, or we send them down a rabbit hole of music, it’s a job well done.
Lauren Goshinksi: Any shoutouts you’d like to make?
Jarrett Tebbets: First and foremost, I want to shout out to my wife, Nicole Battle. She’s been my A1 since Day 1 and always pushes me to do better and be better. Boo Lean, Huny, Dana and Carnegie Museum of Art, thank you for the opportunity to be a part of Inside Out. Lastly, shout out to everyone that eats their Italian hoagies cold.
