Join filmmaker Judith Helfand for a screening of her award-winning film Blue Vinyl followed by a discussion of the East Palestine train derailment with experts on the ground. Vinyl chloride, the subject of Helfand’s 2002 “toxic comedy,” is the substance that burned in East Palestine, OH, upending the lives of residents. Learn how Pittsburgh and Southwestern PA residents have a unique power to make sure a vinyl chloride train disaster does not happen again.

The film screening begins at 2 p.m., followed by discussion at 3:50 p.m.

This screening presented in concurrence with Everlasting Plastics, an exhibition that investigates our relationship with plasticity—both as a metaphor and material construction. On view in the museum’s Heinz Architectural Center, the exhibition makes its North American debut in Pittsburgh following an inaugural presentation as the US Pavilion at the 18th Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2023.
