Algorithms and Social Spaces: Online Workshop

Algorithms, mathematical systems that allow machines to recognize objects, are increasingly being deployed across society. In many situations, their usage is relatively straightforward. But when they are used to help make decisions that can impact people’s lives and choices, things can become far more complicated. By giving participants the opportunity to create their own social algorithms and reflect on the impacts those algorithms have, this workshop shows the ways in which algorithms used in social spaces can exclude and prioritize certain people.

The online workshop is facilitated by artist, researcher, and technologist Mimi Onuoha, and artist, DJ, and educator Mother Cyborg (Diana Nucera) in collaboration with Allied Media Projects. The activity was designed by Onuoha and Mother Cyborg as an educational and speculative approach to understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its growing impact on society, exploring the forms AI takes today and the role AI-based technologies can play in fostering equitable futures.
