Co-presented by Carnegie Museum of Art, Fallingwater, and Pittsburgh Glass Center
We are thrilled to offer this artist-led master class with artist Sara Greenberger Rafferty in partnership with nearby Fallingwater and the Pittsburgh Glass Center!
This immersive master class is designed for creatives and artists with established practices who are seeking to expand their skill set. Creatives who are novices to glass processes are welcome. Participants will be guided through the creative process of transferring photographic images to glass and will create two works as part of the instruction.
Session 1 at Fallingwater, Mill Run, PA
Saturday, October 2, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Be inspired by the surroundings at Fallingwater as Rafferty shares a history of glass and photography and discusses her work in imagery and glass. Share ideas with Rafferty and peers and workshop as a group previous work, new ideas, and experiments. Following this session, participants will digitally prepare images to be printed on glass decals. Sketchbooks are encouraged. (Decal production will be facilitated by the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Details will be discussed during class.)
Creating Glass Photographs Session 2 at Pittsburgh Glass Center
Saturday, October 16, noon–4 p.m.
After a day spent in the lush Fallingwater landscape, join glass artist Becky Smith along with Rafferty in the studio at Pittsburgh Glass Center for a group discussion and hands-on workshop to learn two different processes for transferring your images to glass. You’ll cut, manipulate, and layer sheet glass and apply a variety of glass materials to enhance and distort your photographs. Learn all about image transfer and the kiln-firing process as you create 2-4 finished pieces.
