Photography: Developing Your Visual Voice

Go beyond the “selfie” in your smart phone photography. In this series of exploratory exercises and a final project, you’ll explore innovative work by contemporary photographers in our collection and let their works inspire your own photographic exploration of a subject you choose. Maybe you’ll study you! Bring your research and experiments together in a final project inspired by a novel approach to the portrait.

• Work through fresh ideas you find in works by contemporary photographers in our collection to create your own photography portfolio
• Practice new ways of observing and visualizing your world
• Join a live Zoom workshop on August 21 at 2 p.m. to create your final project inspired by the layering, fragmenting, and compositional techniques of Paul Mpagi Sepuya’s Self Portrait Study with Roses at Night (1709). How will this surprising work give you new ideas for your own inventive approach to the self-portrait?

• Smartphone, tablet, iPad, or other digital camera
• Printer with black ink
• Glue
• Scissors
• Tape
• Mirror

Classes are available starting July 27. Work through the video lessons and create your final artwork in time for a live Zoom session with the teacher and your classmates on Wednesday, Aug 21, from 2-3 p.m.
