A film by Lizzie Borden
Born in Flames (United States of America) takes place ten years after a socialist revolution in New York City, where equality has been promised but sexism and state repression persist. Two pirate feminist radio stations, Radio Ragazza led by Isabel, a white lesbian activist, and Phoenix Radio led by Honey, a calm Black broadcaster, amplify womenâs struggles and call for action. Their broadcasts gain urgency when Adelaide Norris, a travelling militant, is arrested and mysteriously dies in police custody. As tensions rise, a clandestine Womenâs Army trains for more direct action, though Isabel and Honey are initially reluctant to join. Police surveillance, media censorship, and violence against women intensify, pushing different groups of women artists, workers, organisers, toward unity. After both radio stations are burned down, Honey and Isabel merge forces, broadcasting from stolen vans and aligning with the Womenâs Army. Together, they sabotage government propaganda and ultimately bomb the World Trade Center antenna, symbolically disrupting state power and mainstream narratives.
