All photographs are by Charles “Teenie” Harris (American, 1908–1998) and were printed from negatives acquired with the support of the Heinz Family Fund. Harris worked as a photojournalist for publications including Flash magazine and the Pittsburgh Courier. It was standard practice for newspaper journalists and editors to create captions for images, therefore Harris did not title his photographs. As stewards of the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive, Carnegie Museum of Art has catalogued each of his images with a constructed description that includes names of people, places, or events, which have been verified through archival research or community input when possible.
