Crash Course 3: Great Art from the 19th century to Now - Thursday Evening Session

In this rare opportunity, knowledgeable, engaging scholars hand-picked by Carnegie Museum of Art guide you through the famous, the infamous, the mysterious, and the yet-to-be-discovered. It’s a four-week crash course in a big slice of the history of art. And, you’ll have access to the real thing! Participants get access to museum galleries after each session.

This is one part of a 12-week Crash Course.

Art has evolved at a breakneck pace since the 1800s. Start this investigation with a look into 19th-century sculpture, highlighting some of Carnegie Museum of Art’s greats including Antonio Canova, Constantin Meunier, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Consider Auguste Rodin’s artistic innovations and explore what role the French master played in the renewal of sculpture at the turn of the 20th century. Take a quick tour around the vibrant artistic scene of 19th-century Paris, and the emergence of the new artistic movements that inspired not only Monet, Cezanne, and Lautrec, but also Van Gogh and the neo-impressionists.

Fast forward to the mid-20th-century for an examination of the artists who have changed our modern world including Jackson Pollock and Willem DeKooning. Then consider the artists who are changing our world today including Kerry James Marshall, Zanele Muholi, and other artists represented in past Carnegie International exhibitions.
