“Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world.”
—Edward Hopper

Enjoy a quiet moment and picture yourself in Edward Hopper’s Cape Cod Afternoon using this guided meditation.

Step-by-Step Meditation

  1. Take a few moments to look at this work of art.
  2. American artist, Edward Hopper, first visited Cape Cod in 1930, beginning his life-long love of the cape. He enjoyed the landscape and the way geometric structures, like this house, were defined by light and shadow.
  3. As you continue to look at this work, imagine what it would feel like to be in this landscape. Imagine the sounds you would hear, the feeling of the air against your skin, and the scent in the air.
  4. Now, close your eyes and begin to imagine a place that you love, where you feel relaxed and calm.
  5. Imagine this place in as much detail as possible. What different colors do you see? What sounds do you hear? What smells are there?
  6. Take a deep breath in and out as you continue to imagine you are in this place. Are you walking, sitting, or laying down?
  7. Visualize yourself in your own favorite place for as long as you like to relax and calm the mind.
